It weathered storms, droughts, and hurricanes for centuries. Then one day, weighed down by water, decay, and its own great mass, it split down the trunk, casting branches on one side to the ground. The fallen branches no longer balance the growth on the other side, and it may soon topple over as well. WeContinue reading “Broken Oak”

Earthshine
This morning’s thin crescent moon held “the old moon in the new moon’s arms” as earthshine illuminated the darker portion of the moon. On the moon, the earth appeared as a shining blue and white globe four times as large and many times as bright as the full moon as seen from earth. #moon #crescentContinue reading “Earthshine”

Crescent Dawn
Twilight rays of the sun painted clouds orange across a pastel background sky while the onlooking crescent moon could be seen through a peephole in the tree canopy. Can you find it? #twilight #sunrise #morning #dawn #pastels #crescentmoon
Great Expectations
The little plumeria in the blue pot looked like a dry, dead twig when we bought it several weeks ago, streaked with pink and yellow paint. It was simply stuck in some sandy soil from the backyard that looked as dry as the twig. No water was added either, per instructions, to avoid root rot.Continue reading “Great Expectations”
Morning Apparition
At the start of our morning walk, we spotted the strange looking, tadpole-like contrail seen in the top photo, and wondered what sort of jet had produced it. Only it wasn’t a jet, it was a Falcon 9 rocket carrying 29 satellites into earth orbit. As we watched it ascend away from us the reentryContinue reading “Morning Apparition”
A Closer Look
Microscopes and magnifying glasses have been part of my existence since childhood. Curiosity always demanded a closer look in hopes of seeing the “invisible,” not the imaginary invisible, but real things too small to be seen with the naked eye. There is a whole ‘nother world to be seen through the magnifying lens, and whatContinue reading “A Closer Look”
Reflecting the Season
Rays from the setting sun shine and reflect across the southern wall of the music room this time of year. This only happens close to the summer solstice, which occurs on June 21 this year, when the sun rises and sets as far north along the horizon as it ever gets. It’s a sure signContinue reading “Reflecting the Season”
Planetary Parade
This photo was taken from my back yard with an iPhone yesterday evening. The planetary grouping in the western sky after sunset will become even more spectacular the next few evenings as Jupiter and Venus make their closest approach to each other on the evenings of June 8 and 9. They will share the skyContinue reading “Planetary Parade”
The Lucky Bunny-what
The wine was great and the trimmings were captivating, especially this brass figure at the Celestial Hills Tasting Room in McMinnville, Oregon. Depending on the angle of view, I couldn’t decide whether it looked more like a goat, a bunny, or what, but with the mustache and monocle, it certainly was quite a spectacle. EvenContinue reading “The Lucky Bunny-what”
