I remember 1961, I was 10 years old. It was at time of baseball, swimming in the Platte River, dairy cattle, corn and alfalfa fields. I also had a coin collection, mostly pennies since that is all I could afford, and my friends and I marveled that the date 1961 on coins read the sameContinue reading “The Year ’61”

Remembering Irma
Five years ago we spent the night in the laundry, the most protected portion of our house, as hurricane Irma roared through. It was a long, sleepless night. The photo insert shows our storm refuge and the rest of the photo shows the tree remnants of the storm on our yard. The branches had beenContinue reading “Remembering Irma”
The Company You Keep
It was fun watching the Moon duck in and out of the clouds in the western sky while the Sun rose in the east recently. The football-shaped Moon was clearly marked with dark lava flows across its brilliant face as it headed towards last quarter. Without the white clouds, however, the auto exposure of theContinue reading “The Company You Keep”
Dark Sky
Another Florida flyby thunderstorm. Wind, lightning, thunder, brief heavy rain, and then it is gone and the air is cool and moist. #thunderstorm #lightning #wind #rain
Turkey Lurking
The woodland turkeys took a temporary turn towards civilization again. They show up now and then, little bothered by passers by. The matriarch keeps a wary eye out anyway while two of her clan are in the bushes on the left, scratching out breakfast. #wildturkey
No Time for iPhones and Earbuds
The harvest Moon and Jupiter peered between clouds through a slot in the trees. A nearby owl hooted as we walked the deserted street. Cicadas, commonly called katydids, buzzed out their morning song as the dawn brightened and burnished clouds with an orange glow. Birds awoke to serenade us with their chirping, singing, and cawing,Continue reading “No Time for iPhones and Earbuds”
Katydid-done
Though they are actually cicadas, they are often referred to as “katydids.” Their buzzing chirp is heard from the trees throughout the summer. After years underground, they emerge for a few short weeks to date, carouse, and reproduce. Finally at the end of their life, they they fall to the ground, exhausted, to await theirContinue reading “Katydid-done”
Just What You Don’t Want To See
Ordinarily a rainbow is a delight to see, but not when we are on our morning walk and more than a mile from home. Where there are bows, there is rain, and we were on foot. Fortunately, the rain was light and we quickly dried out, but the beauty of the rainbow lingers in ourContinue reading “Just What You Don’t Want To See”
Missing Mineral Point
Last month we were in Mineral Point, Wisconsin and stayed in the Mineral Point Hotel. It was in a beautifully restored building from the 1800’s and was tastefully decorated with period artifacts, photos, and paintings. It was a wonderful place to stay with the whole historical district and adjacent mine remnants with easy walking distance.Continue reading “Missing Mineral Point”
Solar Spectacles
I observe the Sun through specially designed solar telescopes on a nearly daily basis. This is the first time that I felt like the Sun was looking back at me. Filaments of hydrogen held aloft by powerful magnetic fields created this illusion of “Sun Glasses.” #sunglasses #sun #glasses #spectacles
